Hardwood Floor Sanding and Staining in Winnipeg
A sand-and-stain goes past the sheen and changes the colour of the wood itself. It is how a dated orange oak or a flat, pale maple becomes a floor you actually want underfoot.
How colour changes work
Staining only happens after a full sand-back, because stain has to soak into bare wood to do anything. Once the floor is sanded clean we apply the stain, wipe it back to an even tone, let it dry, then seal it under several coats of clear finish. The finish is what protects the colour and sets the final sheen, from matte through satin to gloss.
Oak and maple take stain very differently, and this is the single most useful thing to know before you pick a colour in Winnipeg. Red oak is open-grained and thirsty. It drinks stain readily, holds it in the grain, and takes a dark colour beautifully. Maple is dense and closed-grain, so stain sits on the surface and can go blotchy in patches unless the sanding is finished correctly and the wood is conditioned first. A colour that looks rich on an oak sample can look muddy and uneven on maple, which is why we do a test patch in a closet or under where a rug will sit before the room is committed.
Picking a colour that lasts
The most common regret with floor colour is going too dark. Dark floors show every crumb, every dust bunny, and every pet hair, and they show them worst in the low-angle winter light that comes through a south window here from November to February. Mid-tones hide wear and dust far better and date more slowly.
Bring a sample home and look at it in the actual room, at the times of day you are usually in it, including a grey afternoon in the middle of winter. A stain is a long-term commitment: changing it later means sanding the floor again, which spends more of the wood you have left. Getting it right the first time is worth an extra afternoon of test patches.
