What is usually under a River Heights floor
The character-home belt through River Heights, along Grosvenor, Oak, Dorchester and the streets running down toward the Assiniboine, went up largely in the 1920s and 1930s. That era in Winnipeg means narrow strip hardwood, most often red oak, sometimes maple, laid over a plank subfloor and frequently face-nailed at the edges. It is good wood, cut when the trees were older, and it is usually in better condition than the owner expects because it spent forty years protected under broadloom.
Pulling up carpet in one of these houses regularly turns up a floor that needs a sand and finish rather than replacement. What you tend to find with it is tack-strip holes around the perimeter, staple lines, and a darker border where a rug sat for decades. All of that sands out. What does not sand out is a board that has been cut through for a floor register or a past plumbing repair, and that is a repair rather than a refinish.
